DPF-Back Exhaust Buyer Guide for Powerstroke, Cummins and Duramax
Share
A DPF-back exhaust is the most common first exhaust upgrade on a late-model diesel pickup. It replaces the factory tubing, muffler, and tailpipe behind the diesel particulate filter, so the factory aftertreatment stays on the truck. You get a bigger, cleaner-flowing tailpipe, a deeper sound, and a better look without touching the DPF.
This guide covers what a DPF-back actually changes, how it differs from downpipe-back and delete-pipe systems, how to choose between T409 and polished 304 stainless, and which Polar Diesel 5" DPF-back systems fit the 6.7L Powerstroke, 6.7L Cummins, and 6.6L Duramax. It's written for Canadian truck owners and shops.
What a DPF-Back Exhaust Is
Modern diesel trucks run the exhaust through an aftertreatment stack: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) that uses DEF. The order and packaging vary by platform, but on all three it sits under the cab.
A DPF-back system starts at the outlet of that factory aftertreatment and runs to the tailpipe. Everything upstream (turbo, downpipe, DOC, DPF, SCR, sensors) stays factory. That's the key difference from the other exhaust categories:
- DPF-back: Replaces only the tubing, muffler, and tip after the aftertreatment. Factory emissions hardware stays in place.
- Downpipe-back / turbo-back: Replaces more of the system, often including the downpipe and the aftertreatment section. Depending on the kit, this can remove emissions hardware.
- Delete pipe: Replaces the DPF/SCR section with a straight pipe. Polar Diesel delete pipes are sold for off-road and competition use only.
If you want a sound and looks upgrade on a truck that still runs its factory aftertreatment, the DPF-back is the category to shop.
What to Expect From a DPF-Back
Be realistic about what changes. Because the DPF and SCR stay in place, a DPF-back is mainly about:
- Sound: A deeper, fuller diesel tone, especially without a muffler. Polar Diesel's 5" DPF-back systems are single side exit.
- Looks: A larger 5" tailpipe and, on the 304SS systems, a polished finish built for shows and photos.
- Less restriction after the aftertreatment: Larger, smoother tubing than the factory piping. Any power or fuel-economy change on an otherwise stock truck is modest, so buy a DPF-back for sound, looks, and build quality first.
- Corrosion resistance: Stainless construction holds up better than a rusted-out factory pipe after Canadian winters and road salt.
A DPF-back is also a sensible base if you plan to add a Power Package or other upgrades later, since you keep the same tailpipe section.
T409 vs 304 Stainless: Which Polar Diesel System?
Polar Diesel offers each platform's 5" DPF-back in two builds:
Polar Diesel 5" DPF-Back (T409 stainless)
Built from T409 stainless with pre-bent hangers, stainless lap joint clamps, and precise flanges for an easy bolt-in fit. This is the value pick for a daily-driven work truck where durability matters more than shine.
Polar Diesel ICE 304SS Polished DPF-Back
Built entirely from T304 stainless: tubing, hangers, and flanges. Precisely bent and TIG welded for a polished finish. T304 resists corrosion and discolouration better than T409 and keeps its shine, which is why the ICE system is the pick for show trucks and builds that get photographed.
Rule of thumb: choose T409 for a solid, long-lasting work truck exhaust; choose 304SS when appearance and maximum corrosion resistance are worth paying more for.
Polar Diesel DPF-Back Fitment by Platform
All three platforms use a 5" single side exit layout with easy installation, stainless lap joint clamps, and pre-bent hangers. Always confirm your exact year, cab, bed, and suspension before ordering.

Buyer Checklist Before You Order
- Confirm year, engine, and configuration. Cab & chassis trucks are excluded on the Powerstroke and Duramax DPF-backs. On Cummins, check your suspension (coil, leaf, or air ride).
- Pick your material. T409 for value and durability; 304SS polished for shine and maximum corrosion resistance.
- Decide on sound. If you want a quieter tone, look at Polar Diesel mufflers. For a finished look, add an exhaust tip.
- Check local rules. A DPF-back keeps the factory aftertreatment, but noise, tip placement, and inspection rules vary by province and municipality.
- Plan the install. Read the platform install guide and the official PDF first.
Install Overview (High-Level)
This is not a full install guide and is not a substitute for Polar Diesel's PDF instructions or a professional install. Typical DPF-back steps:
- Let the exhaust cool fully and support the truck safely on a lift or stands.
- Read the official instructions on the platform install guide or the Instructions page.
- Remove the factory tubing and muffler downstream of the aftertreatment outlet. Leave the DPF, SCR, and sensors in place.
- Hang the Polar Diesel system loosely using the pre-bent hangers and lap joint clamps, starting at the aftertreatment outlet and working back.
- Align, then tighten. Set tailpipe position and clearance from the frame, bed, and spare tire, then torque the clamps.
- Run it and check for leaks, rattles, and heat clearance, then re-check clamps after the first few heat cycles.

FAQ
Does a DPF-back exhaust remove the DPF?
No. A DPF-back replaces only the piping, muffler, and tailpipe after the factory aftertreatment. The DPF, SCR, and sensors stay on the truck.
Will a DPF-back add a lot of horsepower?
Not on its own. Because the factory aftertreatment stays in place, the main gains are sound, looks, and less restriction in the tailpipe section. Treat any power or mileage change on a stock truck as a small bonus.
Do I need a tune for a DPF-back exhaust?
A DPF-back that keeps the factory aftertreatment generally doesn't require a tune. Confirm with the product page and instructions for your platform.
What's the difference between T409 and 304 stainless?
Both are stainless. T409 is a durable, cost-effective exhaust grade. T304, used in the Polar Diesel ICE system, resists corrosion and discolouration better and can be polished to a show finish.
Will a Polar Diesel DPF-back fit my cab & chassis truck?
The Powerstroke 6.7 and Duramax 6.6 DPF-back systems will not fit cab & chassis models. Check the Exhausts collection or contact Polar Diesel for other options.
Which Cummins years does the Polar Diesel DPF-back fit?
2019–2026 Ram 2500 / 3500 6.7L Cummins, including coil spring, leaf spring, and factory air ride trucks as listed on the product page.
Is a DPF-back legal in Canada?
A DPF-back keeps the factory emissions aftertreatment, which is why it's the usual choice for street-driven trucks. Noise and modification rules still vary by province and municipality, so check local regulations. Delete pipes and other systems that remove emissions equipment are for off-road and competition use only. This is not legal advice.
